About the apartment

At 55 square metres, the Suite is the largest of the three apartments and the only one with fully separate rooms: its own bedroom, a living room with a library, a separate kitchen and a private bathroom. There are five beds in total.

The rooms are bright and high-ceilinged, as you would expect in a nineteenth-century schoolhouse. We used a lot of natural timber in the renovation and otherwise added little — apart from plants, which are everywhere. The windows look out over the rooftops of the village.

For families the Suite is the obvious choice: the bedroom door closes, and there are children's books and toys, a high chair, a baby bath and children's bicycles. There is also a dedicated desk, in case someone has to work for an hour.

The kitchen is fully equipped and has a dishwasher, which makes a noticeable difference with five people. For longer stays from 28 nights, cleaning can be added on request.

Where you will be

Danube Atelier stands in Rossatz, on the right bank of the Danube in the middle of the Wachau. The building has medieval walls with surviving wall paintings, was converted into the village schoolhouse in the nineteenth century and later served as the kindergarten; we renovated it ourselves, with three apartments and a studio for yoga and Feldenkrais.

Directly opposite, across the river, is Dürnstein with the castle ruin where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner. The motor ferry takes a few minutes.

The Danube Cycle Path passes the house, the World Heritage Trail starts behind the garden, and the river beaches are a ten-minute walk away. The Rossatz vineyards are within walking distance, and the apricot orchards blossom in early April.

Good to know

The garden and the lounge with its library are shared by all three apartments. Parking behind the house is free.

The church across the road rings its bells at night as well, though more quietly. The village shop opposite is open Monday to Saturday in the morning and closed on Sundays.

During your stay you are welcome to join a yoga or Feldenkrais class in the house.
